It’s that time of the year again when our quaint and loved beach town of Playa Tamarindo is in the news all over the world. Not for what it’s well known for, like its spectacular beach, great amenities, or the various Real Estate opportunities available here. It’s because the Tamarindo Beach Marathon is back for its ninth year, gaining prestige with every year, and attracting elite runners from all over the world like; Africa, the USA, Europe and of course Costa Rica. This internationally certified race has turned into one of the most important marathons in Costa Rica, where in the 2014 event there were over 5,000 runners, and this year the number of participants is expected to be even higher. Besides the 42k marathon there is also a 5k, 10k, 21k and a 30k, making this an event for multiple enthusiasts.

Some foreigners might believe that Costa Rica is a savage land. An image of a land lost in time with nothing but dirt roads, chickens running loose in the streets, and the local population traveling in ox carts. Old and colorful school buses or Land Rovers from the 1970s might arise in their minds if they have not been here before.
The good thing is that this back-to-basics lifestyle of enjoying nature, driving through wonderful scenery to arrive at heavenly beaches, rainforests, or active volcanoes, coexists with a prosperous nation with a flourishing economy.

When I first visited Tamarindo on a camping trip in the mid-70s I felt an attraction to constantly want to return and did so with multiple visits. I can’t really put my finger on exactly what it is; the surf, the beach, the fishing, the people or maybe the remoteness (back then). Whatever it is I was hooked, so much so that I returned to stay in the early ‘80s, bought some land, built a business, a home, and have been here since, loving it.

As I follow up on the urban growth of the city of San José and surrounding areas in our central valley and study about the urban phenomena going on there, I can’t avoid comparing it to what I experience day-to-day in the community I live in. For twenty-three years, I lived in that city. Now it has been nine years since I moved to the lovely province of Guanacaste and I have built my home and I am raising my children here.
